The idea about monkeys comes from the winged monkeys of the Wizard of Oz.

The winged monkeys started out as free creatures living in the jungles in the Land of Oz. They were a rather carefree but mischievous bunch, until their king, as a prank, tossed a richly dressed man into a deep river, ruining his velvet costume. She had ruled Oz's northern quadrant, Gillikin Country, and was a sorceress; as punishment for the prank, she enslaved them and made them obey the Golden Cap. Any wearer of the cap could make three demands of the monkeys. Elements about monkeys, too, appear in the movie. But they are not controlled by the man in Buffalo plaid pajamas (just kidding).

In the Jumanji film, a pack of monkeys that were released from the boardgame come across a electronics store where the TV's are playing the 1939 film scene featuring the Winged Monkeys, they start to begin hopping like in the movie along with stealing the television sets from the store.

The story centers on a supernatural board game that releases jungle-based hazards upon its players with every turn they take. As a boy in 1969, Alan Parrish became trapped inside the game itself while playing with his friend, Sarah Whittle. Twenty-six years later, siblings Judy and Peter Shepherd find the game, begin playing and then unwittingly release the now-adult Alan. After tracking down Sarah, the quartet resolves to finish the game in order to reverse all of the destruction it has caused.
